Realistic roses on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a person seated with their legs stretched out on a grey paved surface, wearing white trainers and ripped pale-blue jeans. A large tattoo of several roses covers the upper thigh, with the blooms rendered in soft grey shading and fine detail on the petals. The composition is taken from above, and the tattoo is the main focus against the muted background.

The band had reached the bridge of the third waltz before Ray remembered the flowers. He stood at the edge of the floor with his cap in one hand and a paper cone in the other, the kind the flower seller on Briggate twisted from old newspaper, and he looked at me the way he did when he had got something wrong and wanted forgiving before he owned up to it.

They were roses, cream and blush when he bought them at four o'clock, but they had sat all evening in the damp of the cloakroom, and the petals had gone the colour of pencil lead at the edges. Mrs Tennant at the ticket desk took one look and said nothing, which from her was a verdict. I pulled one free and turned it under the chandelier. Every bloom had been shaded the way a photographer shades a face, deep in the folds and soft at the rims, so that it looked less like a flower than a memory of one.
We danced anyway. Ray held me too close and trod on my good shoes twice, and I let him, because the grey roses kept catching the light as we turned and the room seemed to fill with them, as if the florist had sent the whole of the dim old hall a bouquet.
At the last chord he pinned the biggest one to my lapel with a hatpin, tongue between his teeth, and said it would do until the proper ones came in. I left it there all the way home, through the rain on Kirkgate, and it was still pinned there when I woke up the next morning to find the petals had dried to the exact grey of the photograph on my mother's mantelpiece.
