Black and grey roses on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a large cluster of two roses with shaded petals, dark leaves and a thin trailing vine running down the outer thigh. The petals are rendered with soft gradients and fine detail, giving a realistic, three-dimensional effect. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey ink, and the composition is framed by ripped denim on a white bed.

Dear Nell, the cuttings you pressed on me at Gravesend have held. Two of them, the grey-pink ones from Mother's wall, are in the tin with the wet moss, and I have checked them every morning since the Bay of Biscay, when the sea came green over the rail and took the spare buckets. Cook says I am soft. Cook keeps a parrot that swears in Dutch, so I do not take his opinions to heart.

We are three hundred miles south of the Cape now and the light has gone the colour of pewter. The men laugh at the tin, but on the forecastle at night I draw them. I have no paints, only a pencil stub and the backs of spoiled chart pages, so I shade each petal dark at the rim and leave the heart pale, the way Mother taught us with the steel nib. The bosun asked what they were for. I told him they were for home, and he said that was the sort of answer a man gives when he is pretending not to be homesick.

Yesterday a squall tore the foresail and I thought the tin had gone over the side. I found it wedged under the galley stove, the moss soaked through but the leaves still green at the stems. One vine had curled itself round the handle as if it meant to climb out. I took that for a sign and tied a bit of red wool to it, though I doubt the wool counts for much.

If they live to Valparaiso I will plant them in a barrel on the quay and send you a photograph of the first bloom. It will be a poor grey thing, because the camera belongs to the captain and he will only let me use it for the log. Keep the kettle warm. Your loving brother, Tom.
