A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had kept the walled garden for thirty winters, and in all that time the prioress had never once asked him for a rose. So when she came down the steps on the morning of the thaw and stood at the edge of the beds, he set down his hoe and waited for her to say it.

"The reliquary is empty," she said. "The bishop's man comes by Michaelmas, and he will ask what we keep in the heart of the altar box."

Anselm knew what the box held. Forty years earlier a novice had set a garnet into a sliver of silver and hung it on a string of jet beads, and every abbot since had told the story of the girl who gave her dowry for it. The stone had gone missing in the great flood, and nobody had confessed to losing it.

He did not argue. He led her to the old rose against the south wall, the one nobody pruned because it had never bloomed, and knelt in the wet earth beside its roots. Where the bricks met the clay he found a dark crumb that caught the light like a drop of wine.

The bishop's man arrived at Michaelmas and found the box full, the beads strung about it and a black-leafed rose pressed on the lid. He asked where the stone had come from. Anselm told him the ground keeps what it is given, and that the rose had only been waiting its turn.
