Peony cluster on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of three peony blooms with layered petals and two shaded leaves, drawn in black outline with light stippled shading inside the leaves. The design wraps across the side of the ribcage and spreads diagonally from the lower left to the upper right. The photograph shows only the bare side of the torso and a navy top, with no face visible.

Dear Marjorie,

The peonies came up at the back wall again this year, three heads of them, which is two more than Mother ever managed. Mr Pargeter from the chapel says it's the clay that does it, and I didn't have the heart to tell him it's stubbornness, because I've been pulling weeds round them since April and won't let anyone else touch the beds.

I cut the biggest bloom on Saturday for the Hallam girl's wedding. The florist in Ashby had ordered only roses, pink and cream, and when I brought him the peony in a bucket of well water he just stood there with his mouth open, turning it like a lamp to watch the petals fold over each other. He said nobody in town has ever grown one so tightly packed. I told him it's only patience. Peonies won't be hurried. You can't open them with your fingers, whatever the girls in the shop try.

I've drawn the three of them for you on the back of this sheet, with the leaves beside, the way Mother used to sketch in her seed book. The lowest leaves are shaded where the light fell under the eaves all afternoon. Keep the drawing in your Bible until you come up at Whitsun. I want you to see them before they're gone to seed and the wall goes bare.

Your loving sister, Edie
