Rose and mandala across the ribs and stomach
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a torso showing a large shaded rose with leaves on the left side of the ribs and a symmetrical mandala above the navel. The rose uses soft grey shading and detailed petals, while the mandala is built from crisp linework, dotted beads and dangling drop shapes. The warm skin tone and light grey waistband frame the black and grey ink.

Jet first, then garnet, then the little dark drops that hang from the bottom of a chain so they swing when you walk. You measure the drop by eye, she said, and if your eye is lazy the whole thing sits crooked on the cloth.

The rose was the commission that took the winter. A sailmaker's widow from Polruan wanted a flower worked in grey thread on the lining of her husband's oilskin, then a lace collar to match, and then, because she had lost the habit of asking for less, a medallion of beads to hang at her throat. Ma drew the medallion in pencil on brown paper, a ring of petals with a rose at its heart, and I shaded each petal with graphite until the paper went soft and black under my thumb.
We worked three weeks on it. On the last evening the tide was high against the slip and Ma sat with the finished chain across her palm, letting each drop settle. She counted them twice. Then she nodded at me, and I understood that the lazy eye had been mine and the true one had been hers all along.
The widow came on Saturday, took the medallion without a word, and fastened it at her collar where it caught the light and swung, and I have never been so proud of a thing I had nearly ruined.
