Mandala tattoo on the sternum
Blackwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala with a central rosette, layered petal shapes and drop-shaped dangles below is tattooed centred on the sternum. The design uses dense dotwork stippling and solid blackwork fills to create shading and depth. The ink is black and grey, and the close crop keeps the tattoo as the main focus against the plain skin.

The fair comes over the hill at dusk with its lamps already lit, and you are sent down to the gate with the ledger because you can count coins faster than your uncle can. Behind the dodgems a wagon sits tipped on its side, its panels stripped back to bare pine, and a woman in a grey cardigan kneels beside it with a pot of black ink and a steel nib. Her name is Ruth. The gatekeeper says she came with the carousel crew three summers ago and has never once gone to the bar.

She is drawing a flower on the lid, a rosette at the centre with petals stacked around it like rings in a felled tree, and she works in dots. Thousands of them. From ten feet away the wagon looks like it is breathing smoke. 'Hold the dividers,' she says, and you do, while she sets each stipple with the patience of someone counting rain. The solid petals she fills with a flat brush, black as wet slate, and last of all come the drops hanging beneath the rosette, single beads like the final water off a gutter.
The fair pulls out before she finishes. You watch the wagons roll east along the ridge road, their lamps going out one by one, and you think of the lid still open to the sky with the rosette half shaded and the lower petals bare. Ruth had told you the centre was the only part that had to be right. The rest was there to keep the eye moving inwards.
Three weeks later a postcard arrives at the farm with no return address. On the front is a photograph of a wagon lid, finished, the drops hanging perfectly still. On the back, in small square capitals, is a single line: THE LOWER PETALS WERE YOURS. COUNT THEM IF YOU LIKE.
