Rose heart and banner hearts flash sheet
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
The sheet shows two tattoo designs drawn on white paper inside a dotted border. On the left, a black heart outlined with white dots holds a pink rose with teal leaves and a small dangling charm. On the right, two stacked black hearts with gold edges are crossed by a banner reading YOU SUCK, with arrows and dotted shading around them. The bold outlines and flat colour fills are typical of traditional flash.

The vicar had got as far as the rings when Dougie Malone dropped his into the bowl of rose petals at the front of the church, and I watched it sink past a dozen pink heads like a coin in a wishing well. Gran Edie leant across the pew and hissed that it was a sign. Nobody in our family believes in signs unless they're cheap to follow.

The ring turned up at the reception, tucked inside the cake knife case. Dougie's new wife, Shona, had found it while fetching napkins and decided, in front of forty guests, that he would have to sing for it. He sang badly. Ricky, the best man, had ordered matching lapel pins for the groomsmen from a stall at the car boot sale, little black hearts with a rose inside and a brass charm swinging from the bottom, and every time Dougie bowed, his pin caught the light and winked at the room.
Later, Ricky and I found a strip of ribbon pinned to the wing of a ute in the car park. Someone had sewn gold letters onto it that spelled YOU SUCK, clearly meant for a different sort of do. We stood under the dead floodlight laughing until Ricky had to sit on a bollard. Then Shona came out in her heels, took the ribbon from my hand, and said it was the best thing she'd seen all day and she wanted it on the wedding car.
Dougie married her anyway, and the ribbon rode on the bonnet all the way to the hotel. Gran Edie still reckons the ring in the petals was a sign, and she has never once admitted it was the cheap sort.
