Rose line art on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a striped top holds her arm across her body, showing a black outline tattoo of a rose with several leaves along the forearm. The linework is fine and even, with the petals and leaves left open and unshaded. A second, shaded foliage tattoo sits on the upper arm and shoulder in grey tones against a plain white background.

Write back and tell me how the leaves look in your window. Last week the bush dropped two of them on the flagstones and I stood there like a fool, counting the veins as though they might tell me what to do. Father always said a rose shows its temper in the leaves first. These are sharp at the edges and a little hard, and they curl at the tip when the wind comes off the tarn. I have drawn them three times on the back of the rent book so I can see what they are doing when I am not looking.

The carter says the pass will close again by Martinmas, so I have stopped trying to go over it myself. Instead I wrote to the nursery at Keswick and asked them to send a second cutting in the spring, and to put it in with the lime and the bone meal, not the manure. I have a feeling this one will do better than I deserve.
