Rose sleeve on a forearm and elbow
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm and elbow covered in a floral tattoo of several roses with leaves and curled petals. The linework is bold and the petals are shaded with soft grey gradients, with fainter flowers continuing up the arm. The composition is close and angled, with a wristwatch visible at the wrist and a dark top behind.

Dear Ruth,

The abbot has finally let me take cuttings from the old wall rose, the one that splits the south side of the infirmary like a crack in a plate. You said I would never get it to take, and you were half right. The first three went black at the root. The fourth has put out two shoots, pale green at the tips and already hardening, and I have been crouching beside it for an hour like a heron, pretending to weed.
Brother Anselm says the cutting is a sport from a rose brought over from Flanders before the fire, and that its petals curl back on themselves in a way no other bush manages. He showed me the old drawing in the chapter house, done in ink with the shadows laid on in grey wash, and I thought of how the petals looked on the sketch: heavy, cupped, the inner whorls drawn tight as a fist. Anselm says the artist never saw the flower open. He drew what the closed bud promised.
I am sending you a pressed bloom with this letter, though I know it will arrive flattened and grey, the way everything arrives from here. Keep it in the book you never finish. If the root takes, I will write again in spring, and you can tell me whether it was worth the walk up the hill for a rose that refused to die.
Yours in patience, Thomas
