Rose sprig on the inner wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two roses with rounded petals and several leaves on stems, arranged in a loose cluster that runs up from the wrist. The linework is light and sketchy, with soft grey shading inside the petals and leaves. The photo is a close crop of an arm in an orange top against a blurred green background.

The hedge at the bottom of Hollin Field still held its roses, the last hips gone wrinkled and dark, and a few late blooms hung on with brown edges.

Her father had sold the herd in October. He had never been one for drawing, and he said so when he found her at the kitchen table with the pages spread out, but he set the kettle on without being asked. She had been trying to get the rose right for three weeks: the cupped petals folding in on themselves like a hand closing, the leaves that curled at the edges after the first hard night.
At the gate she stopped and sat on the cold post. She drew two heads on one stem, one turned toward the house and one toward the road, and shaded the inside of the petals with the side of the lead until her fingers ached. A blackbird went off in the hedge like a rusty hinge.
When she stood, the page was smudged grey where her wrist had dragged across it. She didn't mind. Her father would be wanting the feed sorted before dark, and the roses would hold through another week of frost, which was more than she had expected of anything this winter. She tore the sheet out, folded it into her pocket, and went back up the lane.
