A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dolan the carter had been three days on the Sallow road with an empty cask when he saw the rose. It grew out of a split cistern at the crossroads, full blown and black in the noon glare, with two leaves pricking the air above it as if someone had drawn them in ink.

The woman who kept the well, Nessa Marrow, filled his cask without asking his name. She pointed at the chain strung from the old iron lintel, its little drops of water hanging from the links like the pendants on her grandmother's collar. Every morning, she said, she hung one drop from the rose's thorns, and the rose drank it. "Leave one for the rose," she said, "and the road will let you go." Dolan laughed and took his water.

He did not leave a drop. He drove east with the cask sloshing behind him and the chain swinging in his mirror until the heat bent the road into a lake. That night the wind came off the flats, and when he woke the cask was dry, his wheels were sunk to the hubs, and he could not remember which way the crossroads lay.

It took him two days to walk back. Nessa was sitting on the cistern wall when he arrived, mending a torn sleeve. The chain hung bare and the rose had gone to grey dust, all but one bud, closed tight. "Took you long enough," she said. On a thorn beside it shone a single drop of water, and Dolan knelt in the sand and did not ask where it had come from.
