Rose inside a triangle on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A rose is drawn in fine black outline, with its outer petals left open and its central bloom enclosed by a large triangle. The petals and inner triangle are shaded with stippled dotwork, giving a textured, shaded look. The design is in black ink on a single forearm, centred in the frame against a blurred wooden background.

The lens came from Lisbon in forty crates, and the one marked with a red triangle held nothing but a prism the size of a cabbage. Mr Hollis at the depot swore it was the heart of the whole apparatus. I signed for it, carried it up a hundred and twelve steps on my back, and set it in the lantern room, where the gulls kept knocking their heads against the glass.

My wife Agnes had planted roses in the one patch of soil the wind had not stripped, a single bush the colour of weak tea. In October it dropped its last bloom while I was polishing brass, and I found a petal stuck to the inside of the prism, dead centre, as if someone had pinned it there. The light passed through it and came out the other side as a smear of pink across the rock.

The inspector came in November and said the triangle was a sensible shape for a rough coast, because three points hold steady in any wind. He did not look at the rose. I did not tell him that I had begun leaving the lamp unlit for an hour each evening so I could watch the petal in the dark of the lens, one stubborn colour inside all those hard edges.

When the spring gales came they took the bush, the fence and very nearly the door. I kept the petal in my shirt pocket until it crumbled to dust. The lamp turns on schedule now, the ships steer by its white beam, and not one captain has ever asked why there is a rose folded inside the glass.
