Shaded rose with pearl strands on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large open rose sits at the centre of the forearm, surrounded by leaves and a looping strand of pearls that curves up and down the arm. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading, fine stippling and crisp highlights to suggest depth and volume. The image is black and white against a dark background, with the arm filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The necklace came up in Dab Harker's net on the third morning of the north wind, knotted in weed and a length of rotten rope, and nobody in Crane Haven wanted to say whose throat it had once sat against. Dab carried it up the hill in his cap. Mara Pell, who kept the chandlery and knew everybody's business before they did, took it from him without a word and laid it out on her counter like a catch she had been expecting.

There were forty-one pearls on it. She counted them twice, then a third time with her lips moving, and said that was one short of what the tale wanted. The tale was old in Crane Haven. A girl had gone out to the rocks beyond the lighthouse to meet a boat that never came back, and the sea had kept her pearls and given back only the roses that grew wild along the harbour wall, pink in June and sweeter than anything in the Wren's Garden. Mara said the roses were just roses. She still took a bloom from the wall each morning and pressed it under the glass of her counter, and by August the wall was thick with them.

Dab's boy, Tobias, was nine and no respecter of tales. He pulled a spare pearl from his pocket, the one he had found in the tideline below the slipway, and set it down beside the others. Mara looked at it for a long while. Then she strung the lot on fresh thread, wound the strand twice round the pressed rose, and hung it in the window where the afternoon light could reach it.

Every spring after that, the high tide left one bead on the slipway, round and grey as a gull's egg, and Mara hung it with the others and never once asked where it came from.
