Roses and beaded strands on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows several roses in different stages of bloom, with buds, shaded leaves and a long string of beads that loops across the upper arm and down towards the elbow. The roses are outlined in bold black linework, with heavier shading on the leaves and the background roses. The image is a black and white photograph, with the arm filling most of the frame and a dark background behind it.

The frost came earlier than the almanac promised, so you go down the garden in your father's coat with the secateurs in one pocket and the lamp swinging from your other hand. The roses along the wall are past their best, heads browning at the edges, but the old ones by the gate have held on out of spite. Your aunt always said they were as stubborn as Methodists. You cut three stems, then a fourth, and the bud at the top of the fourth is still tight and dark in the lamplight, a closed fist that refuses to open.

In the potting shed the beads are waiting in a biscuit tin: jet and bone and a few fat glass pearls, all strung on waxed thread she knotted by hand. She made rosaries for the parish for forty years and never once let anyone hurry her. You find the length she was working on the week before her stroke, half finished, a loop that runs past the last bead and stops. Your fingers know the pattern before your head does. Three pearls, a knot, a jet bead the size of a hazelnut.
You thread the cut roses through the loop, stem to stem, the way she taught you, and lay the whole thing on the bench under the lamp. The heads nod against the glass pearls. It looks less like mourning than like something carried up a hill on a feast day. Grey light is creeping over the window when you tie off the final knot, and the stubborn bud still has not opened.
You leave it on the gatepost for the neighbour to find, and walk back up the path with the frost cracking under your boots. Behind you, the bud keeps its own counsel.
