Roses and revolver on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A side view of a thigh and hip with a large realistic tattoo of several roses, leaves and an ornately engraved revolver grip. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast in the petals and leaves. The image is black and white, and the tattoo fills most of the frame, with a blurred indoor background.

The big top at Halloran's had lost its red by the end of the season, and by March the sawdust smelled of wet dog and paraffin. You are the last act still drawing a wage, which is how you come to be standing at the back of the ring with a revolver whose grip was engraved with vines by a man who died owing you money. Rosa, the knife-thrower's daughter, holds the roses up by their stems between two fingers, the way she has every night since Carlisle, and she does not look at you.

The trick is simple enough. You shoot the petal off each bloom while the crowd pretends they can see the bullet travel. Vernon stands by the flap with his ledger, counting the takings in his head and adding them up wrong on purpose so he can sleep. There are forty people in the stands tonight, and eleven of them are children who have been promised a pony ride that no longer exists.

The first rose goes cleanly. So does the second. On the third your hand shakes, not from fear but from the cold coming up through the boards, and the shot takes the whole head clean off the stem. Rosa catches the stalk and laughs, a sound you have not heard in weeks, and the crowd laughs with her as if it was meant.

After the last of them has gone and the lamps are guttering, you find one petal caught in the engraved vines of the grip. You turn it over in the lamplight, then fold it into your waistcoat pocket, where it stays long after the band packs up and the tent comes down around you.
