The embossing frame arrived on Tuesday wrapped in a feed sack, and I have spent three evenings learning to set a cell without tearing the paper. Sister Agnes says the children at Harrowgate will read faster than I can punch, which is no great achievement since I have never once managed to punch a line straight. Your sentences were always neater than mine, so I am sending you this one to check.

Enclosed is the strip I could not finish. It is the sixth line of the hymn you asked for, the one about the lamp left burning in the window. I keep getting the dots in the wrong order, six up and two across, and a reader's thumb would stall on the same place twice. Mrs Hobday from the laundry says I am overthinking it, that nobody reads with their wrists anyway, and I told her she has never had to sleep with a book under her pillow to learn a verse.

Last night the lamp in the hall went out at midnight, and I finished the line by feel, which is the only honest way to write these. I pressed the final cell and held the paper up to the window to check. The dots came through the back as small hills. I could not see them, but I could count them with my forefinger, and the count was right.
