Small seven on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single small numeral 7 sits on the inner wrist, just below the base of the hand, with the forearm running down the frame. The linework is thin and even, and the digit is filled in solid black ink. The plain wooden background and soft, even light keep the focus on the tattoo.

Walter came through the side door of the Starlight Rooms every Saturday with his hat in one hand and a brass check in the other, and every Saturday he asked me for number seven. I kept the cloakroom at the back of the ballroom, a wooden hatch the width of a tea tray, and the checks hung on hooks in rows like the keys of a piano. Number seven was his coat, though he never once wore a coat in June.

We had an arrangement, if you could call it that. He would dance the seventh waltz with whoever was left standing at the edge of the floor, and I would count the bars from the hatch, because the bandleader, Mr Lacey, always stamped his foot on the seventh bar of the tune he had been playing since the war. You could set a clock by it. Walter said the stamp was the only honest thing in Burnley.
Then in March he did not come. The band played the waltz anyway. Mr Lacey stamped his foot on the seventh bar and I stood at the hatch with a check in my fist, and a girl from the typing pool asked me whether the coat was still there. I told her to fetch it herself. I stopped at the seventh bar and waited, and the dance floor turned its faces away from me.
In April a letter came for the hatch, addressed only to Number Seven, Cloakroom. Inside was a single line in pencil: the stamp is yours now, Nell, mind the beat. I have kept it in my apron pocket ever since, and on Saturdays, when the seventh bar comes round, I lift my heel and bring it down on the boards.
