The river at Denver Sluice was the colour of weak tea the morning Dad finally let me take the punt out alone. He stood on the bank with his cap pushed back, not helping, the way he never helped, only watching the water as if it owed him money.

I had the oars for the first hour. The tide came up under the boat from the sea, a slow pull you feel in your back teeth, and every stroke towards the far reeds the river took a little back. I thought of the old eel men who used to row this stretch in the dark with a lantern wedged in the bow. Dad said they never once looked over their shoulders, because there was nothing behind them worth seeing and everything ahead was mud.

By noon my palms had blistered through and I was crying in the furious, silent way of a boy who will not be seen crying. Then a heron lifted off the bank beside me, slow as a sheet being shaken out, and I stopped pushing and let the boat turn. We drifted back past the sluice gates towards him.

He didn't say well done. He took the oars, rowed us the last hundred yards in long easy strokes, and tied the painter to the post. 'Same as always,' he said, nodding at the water. 'Lose a yard, gain it back on the next bend.' I have rowed that river for forty years since, and I still hear him whenever the current gets heavy.
