Single-line sailing boat on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line drawing of a two-masted sailing boat with two sails and small pennant flags sits on a pale forearm. The outline is a thin, even black line with no shading or fill, and the hull has a few dots along its upper edge. The image is black and white and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

On Skerrymoor, where the rock runs out into the grey like a crooked finger, the keeper Tam Corrie could not write his name but could draw a boat. Every evening before he climbed to the lamp he sketched one on the whitewashed wall of the lamp room with a stub of chalk. Two masts, two sails, a little pennant at each top. He never lifted the chalk from the plaster until the drawing was finished, and his wife Nan told him it was a daft habit for a man with a lamp to trim.

One March night a fishing smack went missing in the fog off the Shoulder. Tam rowed out in the dinghy to look for her, and the light burned all night without him. Nan stood at the kitchen window and counted the turns of the lamp. At first light the dinghy was found upturned in the kelp, and neither the man nor the smack ever came in.
Nan climbed to the lamp room that morning. The boat on the wall was whole now, its hull closed at the stern in the same unbroken line, and beside the water beneath it someone had put a row of small dots. She had not made them, and she could not say for certain who had.
She took up the chalk and, the way he always had, did not lift it. Each night after that she trimmed the lamp and drew the boat again, sailing for home. On fog nights, the people of Skerrymoor say, a sail can be seen at the Shoulder, coming in slow with its pennants lifting.
