A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud had been digging for the bean poles when the spade rang against iron. The anchor came up black with clay, its shaft still stiff, its flukes bent like a pair of tired elbows. Her husband Dennis had sworn he'd tossed it off the harbour wall in 1987, after the Marigold lost her mooring, and she had never believed a word of it, because Dennis never threw away anything he could sell.

She carried it to the back step and scrubbed it with a wire brush while the gulls on the wall watched her. Across the bay the tide was going out in long, patient strokes, the way it always did, and then it came back along the same road. Dennis used to draw that pattern for her on the backs of invoices: a figure eight lying on its side. He called it the sea's way of saying nothing ever really ends.

At dusk the gulls lifted off the coping all at once and wheeled out over the water in a wide loop. They came back and settled along the wall one by one, as if someone had sent for them. Maud stood at the gate with the anchor in her arms and decided she would not sell it to the scrap man after all.

She pushed the shaft into the soft earth beside the fence, one fluke turned to the wind, and tied the first bean vine to its ring. By June it would be climbing, twisting round the iron like a length of rope with nowhere in particular to go, and she meant to let it.
