Running mustang outline with script on upper back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A thin outline of a galloping horse, in a teal-green ink, sits above the word Mustang written in black cursive script. The linework is single-weight and unshaded, and the design is centred on the upper back with a fine chain visible at the neck. The image has warm, natural lighting and a soft background of greenery and a red car.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad had the Mustang jacked up on axle stands when the rain started, and he would not let me touch the wiring until I could tell him the colour of the car from the plate on the door. Epsom Green, I said, and he laughed so hard he had to sit on the bumper. That was in the lock-up behind the bakery in Bootle, where the roller door rattled every time a bus went past.

He had bought it off a man in Preston who needed the money for a wedding. It came down the motorway on a flatbed, then sat two winters under a tarpaulin while Dad saved coins in an old biscuit tin. Every Sunday we drove it round the ring road with the windows down and the radio low, the lane lines blurring past like someone had dragged a thumb through wet paint.

The spring he finally got it running, the engine coughed twice and then settled into a low grumble, like something waking up in another room. Mum came out with a tea towel over her shoulder and stood in the road without saying anything. Dad lifted the bonnet and told me to listen, and I did, and under the noise I heard nothing but the gulls over the Mersey and the sound of him breathing out.

He sold it the following year to pay for my driving test. I still keep the buyer's phone number on a scrap of paper in my wallet, and whenever I see a running horse on the back of a car I think of the tin, the tarpaulin and the way he said go on, then, as though he had been waiting for me to ask.
