Small fine line wave on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black line tattoo sits on skin shown in close black and white photography. The linework combines jagged peaks on the left with a single curling wave on the right, with some fine shading along the strokes. The tattoo is placed in the middle of the frame, with a loose white garment framing the lower edge of the image.

The snow has shut the pass again, so I am writing this by the kitchen range while Mr Gorse argues with the postman about a parcel none of us has seen. We are down to two guests: a surveyor from Perth who sleeps in his boots, and Mrs Hanley, who asks every morning whether the loch has frozen over yet. I tell her no. I tell her it is only skinned at the edges.

You will remember the story Father told about the mountain that walked down to the water to see what the waves were for. I thought of it yesterday when I climbed to the attic window. The peaks stood white against the dusk, sharp as the teeth of a saw, and below them the loch had cracked into long grey ribbons that curled up where the wind got under them. It looked for all the world like a wave caught mid-breaking and held there by the frost.
I went down to the boathouse with a lantern to fetch coal and found the oars still hung on their hooks, untouched since October. I stood there longer than I needed to. Then I chalked Mrs Hanley's name on the slate by the door, the way you wrote mine in the ledger the day you left, and went back up to bed.
The thaw is forecast for Thursday. When it comes I will row out to the middle of the loch and see whether the wave breaks or simply lets go. Write back by post, if the post gets through. Your loving sister, Ada.
