Sisters script with pink swash on lower back
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the side of a lower back, showing the word sisters in black script lettering. A looping pink and red swash curls around and under the word, outlined in darker ink. The skin is in soft focus at the edges, with a white bikini strap running across the frame.

Her younger sister Ruth had signed the papers at Ceres without telling her. The pink loop of the old signal lamp, bent round the lock like a ribbon someone had forgotten to tie, had been the first thing Hester ever learned to steer by. Ruth called the lamp a waste of coolant. Hester said nothing, because the word on the hatch was the only thing on the station older than the two of them.
Forty hours out, the comms began to chatter with a voice from the Kessock relay asking for a berth number. Ruth read it, closed the screen, and went aft to the cargo bay. When Hester followed, she found her sister sealing a small crate, its lid stencilled with a curl of red paint copied from the lamp, and beneath it a line in the same careful hand: for when the lights go out.
Hester reached past her and threw the lamp switch. The loop of pink light spilled across the bulkhead, curled around the crate, and held there, steady as a hand on a shoulder, until the relay's question went quiet and the tug turned for home.
