Watercolour style tattoo of a sailing boat with blue wash, black linework and ink splatters on the upper arm.

Sailing boat with blue watercolour splashes

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A sailing boat with a tall mainsail and jib sits on a curved hull, drawn with bold black lines and loose sketchy strokes. Turquoise and blue washes fill the sails and spread into splashes and drips across the lower part of the design, with black ink spatter scattered around it. The design is shown on a close-up of a limb against a soft, blurred background.

Dear Tom, the boat came round the Ness on Tuesday with the wind behind her and her mainsail full as a bellied sheet. I stood on the gallery with the glass and knew it was the Marigold before I could make out her name, because nobody else on this coast paints a hull that colour. Mr Pryce says it is the blue of some gulf abroad, which is nonsense, but I let him have his fancy.

The lamp was already unlit, the day being bright, so I had nothing to do but watch her tack. She went about twice off the Skerry, staggering, her jib shivering like a washing line, and then she found the channel and slid past the buoy as neatly as thread through cloth. Pryce swears there was ink splashed across her deck, though I think it was only spray, and the sea does its own painting here.

I have kept this flame lit for nineteen years and never once seen a boat look so pleased with itself. Come home before the equinox. The gallery door sticks, but I have oiled the hinges, and the kettle is still on the hook where you left it.
