Parachute on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A parachute canopy is drawn in fine black linework, with its panels shaded in teal and pale blue on the left and fading to dark grey on the right. The design sits on a forearm against a softly blurred dark background. The colour is mostly blue and grey with black outlines, and the lines are kept thin and even.

Forty-eight of them, each one thin as a hair, and every one had to run true, because the men at the airfield would trust their lives to the count.

The loft smelled of camphor and machine oil. Her brother had been a rigger before the war and had taught her the knots, though he never let her pack a live chute. Today the order had come from the club at Hallam Fields: a demonstration jump for the village fête, a sergeant's cousin in the harness, and a canopy that had to be ready by dawn. Pryce kept saying the colours were wrong, that silk should be white, that nobody would see a blue one from the ground. Nell said that was exactly why it should be blue.
She found the fault at the edge of a gore, a single line slipped off its eyelet. She threaded it back, pulled it taut, and felt the whole fan of panels settle. Pryce came over with his spectacles pushed up and looked for a long time. Then he took the pin out of her mouth and stuck it in the cushion strapped to her wrist.
"Pack it yourself," he said. "I'll not be the one to tell the sergeant it's the wrong shade."
