Blue watercolour rose on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large blue rose sits on a forearm, its petals drawn with soft shading and pale highlights. Loose black, orange and purple ink splashes spread around the bloom and down the arm, giving a painterly finish. A second arm with a similar blue rose appears at the top of the frame against a blurred, bright background.

The road out past Saltwick ran forty miles without a bend, and every carrier who drove it kept a tin cup on the dash. Nobody remembered who first planted the blue rose at the thirty-mile marker. Old Maud Pellow swore it had been there before the tar, a single bush with petals the colour of a kingfisher's back, and that it only opened after rain that had fallen somewhere else.

The summer Tobias Hale hauled water for the mine, the land went dry as bone for eleven months. He passed the rose every morning and every morning it was shut tight, its edges bruised with black as if someone had flicked ink at it from a brush. He stopped twice a week to pour a cup at its roots. Nobody asked him why. The sand turned orange with dust when the wind came from the east, and the violet of the evening crept along the ridge to meet it.
In the twelfth month a storm broke so far north that it reached the road only as a smell of wet iron. Tobias stopped at the marker and found the bush heavy with one bloom, its petals edged in pale light, the dark marks running down the stems like rain on a windscreen. He filled his cup, poured it slowly, and sat with the engine ticking until the air changed.
He drove on without looking back. Behind him the rose held its colour through the afternoon, and then the dust rolled over the flat and it was only a dark shape against the sand. The cup stayed on the dash, and it is still full.
