Traditional · Colour · Flash
A hand-drawn design of a three-masted sailing ship with full sails and rigging, set above a cluster of stylised waves. A curling banner on the left carries the words LOVE IS LIKE A TIDE BRINGING YOU HOME, with a small heart below. The image is drawn in dark blue ink with dense hatching and stippling on pale grey-green paper.

Mrs Hale stood at the end of Pier Four every evening with a lantern she never lit, and the harbour men had stopped asking her to go home. Her husband had sailed the Constance Ruth out past the Skerries in March, bound for the Baltic with a hold full of salt herring and eleven men aboard, and the ship had not come back. The town said she was lost. Mrs Hale said she was late.

In the second week of October a chandler's boy came running up the quay with a folded square of oilcloth. Somebody had pinned it to the gate of the Seamen's Mission during the night. Inside, in pencil, a line had been written in a careful hand: Love is like a tide, bringing you home. Beneath it was a small heart, smudged where the lead had been pressed too hard. Mrs Hale read it twice, then a third time, because the capital L had a loop at its foot that her husband had been teased for since he was a boy.
She took the note to the harbourmaster, who kept the logbooks of the last three voyages in a drawer under his desk. The torn page from the Constance Ruth matched it, the same blue-black ink and the same sheet of paper with a coffee ring on one corner. The date at the top of the page was nine days old. A ship that goes down does not post letters to the Mission gate, and Mrs Hale had known that from the first night, but knowing a thing and being given it are not the same.
At the next high water she walked out to the end of Pier Four and lit the lantern at last. The tide came in grey and full, lifting the moored boats one by one, and beyond the Skerries a single sail showed pale against the dusk, hove to and waiting for the flood to carry her home.
