Sailing ship, waves and anchor with quote
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn sailing ship with hatched sails and rigging sits on stylised wave lines, with a dotted line running down to an anchor on the left. The phrase a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor is written in italic script beneath the waves. The drawing uses black ink linework and shading on a plain white background, with the ship placed centrally and the text balanced at the lower right.

The wind has turned against the wedding party before the vows are even read, and you are the one who has to say so. Your aunt Maud stands at the end of the pier in her hat, holding the ribbon that was meant to tie the two boats together, and she looks at you as though the weather is your fault. You have been a harbour pilot for thirty years. You know what a flat calm looks like from the rigging, and this is not it.

The ship in the bay is the Constance, a tired schooner the couple borrowed from a cousin who never sails her. Her sails are patched with old flour sacking. Nobody thought to check the anchor chain until this morning, when you found one link rusted down to the width of a finger. Your son Tom, who is marrying the girl from the chandlery, has his good shoes wet to the ankle and is laughing about it, which is more than you can manage.
"A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor," he says, reading it off the card the caterer printed for the reception. He thinks it is a joke. You take the card from him and fold it into your waistcoat pocket.
You go out in the tender with the bride's father and the new rope you bought from the ironmonger. The swell lifts you and drops you. Halfway across the chain holds, the old boat swings round on it, and everybody on the pier starts to cheer. You do not look back. You are watching the water, which is finally, reluctantly, going down.
