Sailing ship and lighthouse on the chest

Traditional · Chest · Colour · Photo

A large sailing ship with full sails sits on the right side of the chest, with a red and white striped lighthouse on the left under a burst of yellow rays. Stormy clouds frame the scene, and teal and dark blue waves run across the bottom, with small black stars scattered between the elements. Bold black outlines and solid fills give the piece a classic flash look, with colour ink dominating the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fish market at Calder Quay had shut early because of the rain, but Mara Veck stayed on under the tin awning with her basket of unsold mackerel, waiting for the lamp-keeper's boy to come down from the point. Everyone knew the ship in the harbour mouth was the Greywater, three masts and a torn mainsail, and everyone knew she had been out past the rocks since Tuesday.

Her grandmother had told the story plainly, the way you would tell a recipe. The lighthouse on Scarrow Point had a red and white stripe for every man lost trying to reach it in bad weather. Nobody counted the stripes any more. The paint was renewed each spring, and the keepers said the rays from the lamp reached farther than any light had a right to, yellow as butter, so that sailors could find the channel even when the sky sat black with cloud.

The boy came at dusk, soaked to the skin, and said the keeper had lit the lamp twice that night and the ship had answered with a single bell. Mara set the mackerel down. She walked the wet cobbles to the end of the quay with the first stars sharp above the storm, and waited with the rest of the town until the Greywater's sails came through the gap, one by one, like pages turned in a book.

She never told anyone what she had promised the sea that morning. The gulls took the mackerel. The lamp stayed lit. Some things in Calder are simply kept, and the rain went on falling on the market the way it always does.
