Sailing ship tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
A detailed sailing ship with billowing sails, rigging and small flags sits above a band of stylised waves. The ship is drawn in fine blue linework with soft shading on the sails and hull, giving an etched, engraving-like look. The tattoo is centred on the upper back of a person with dark hair tied back, with the nape of the neck visible above it.

Your father swore the plate above the galley stove was Dutch, a galleon painted in blue on white, and that no ship ever sailed so well on paper as it did in clay. You were nine, and the Marigold was grinding up the Grand Union at the pace of a sulking horse, so you believed everything he said about the sea. Every lock that week you stood on the cill with the windlass and counted the sails you meant to hoist one day.

At Cowley lock a boy from the next boat, Tobias Penhale, told you the ship on the plate was a fake, that no barge had ever been that handsome. You didn't argue. You went back to the Marigold that evening and found your father asleep with his boots on and the Thames tide chart pinned open above him, the one he had marked with a pencilled cross at Gravesend. You took the pencil and drew a second cross beside it, then a row of tiny flags running up a mast you had never seen.
Three winters later the Marigold was sold for scrap in Brentford, and the plate went with the galley to a junk shop on the High Street. Your father never forgave the buyer. You forgave him sooner, because the chart was still folded in your coat pocket. On the morning the lock-keeper swung the gates, you cast off the lines alone, the windlass in one hand and the pencilled cross in the other, and let the river carry you towards the water you had drawn.
