Sailing ship in ornate frame on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A sailing ship with billowing sails sits in a stormy sky inside an ornate oval frame, with a skull at the base of the frame. The ship and clouds are rendered with soft, graduated shading and fine detail, while the scrollwork frame is outlined and shaded in grey. The ink is almost entirely black and grey, with a faint warm tone from the skin, and the tattoo is shown centred on a bare lower leg against a dark background.

Nell Pascoe took the portrait down the night the Teal Marigold failed to round Gannet Rock, because the frame was the only thing in the parlour worth saving from her husband's debts. Ornate and heavy, it had come off a dead shipwright's wall with its scrollwork chipped, and inside it the storm had painted itself in ash and smoke: a three-masted barque heeled over under black cloud, every sail bellied and torn.

She hung it above the range in the bakery on Cooper's Lane, where the ovens were lit before the gulls were up. Her man had never sailed the Marigold, only sold her the rye that filled her hold, but the paint kept changing a little each morning. The sails had gone from grey to white. A thread of rigging had crept down toward the skull at the base of the frame, the one that grinned where the lettering should have been.
On the fourth of March she found flour on the floor in a line of footprints, wet with harbour water, leading from the door to the frame and stopping there. She did not scream. She cut the first loaf of the day, set it on the sill to cool, and said aloud to the empty shop, 'You'll have your bread, then, and you'll have it hot.'
The following spring the Marigold came in on the tide, her hull sound, her crew thin and sheepish, her cargo of rye still dry in the hold. Nell kept the frame. The storm in it had gone quiet, and the ship sat level on a sea of flat grey paint, sailing home.
