Sailor portrait with swallows and roses
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A bearded sailor in a knitted cap and striped top smokes a curved pipe, with a small anchor tattooed on his cheek. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills define the face, beard and sailor collar, with shading used only lightly on the skin. Two red roses with leaves, twisted rope, a sunset over the sea and two swallows surround the portrait on a black background.

The swallows had already nested under the quay roof when the Hester Gale came in on the evening tide, and Tom Ashby, who had been at sea since he was twelve, counted them from the bow the way other men counted their wages. Four pairs. He told the mate it was a sign. The mate told him it was a bird.

Tom had a pipe he never lit at sea, a curved thing his brother carved from briar and posted to him in a parcel that smelt of tar and oranges. On shore he smoked it at the rope walk, where old Mrs Pryce kept a rose bush trained up the wall and paid the boys a penny to splice cable for her son's boat. She said the roses did better for the salt. Tom said they did better for the smoke. They argued about it most evenings until the light went orange over the water.
That autumn the Hester Gale was sold for scrap, and the swallows began to gather on the telegraph wire in a restless row. Tom sat on the quay with his pipe cold in his fist. Mrs Pryce came down with a length of tarred line in her apron pocket and pressed it into his palm, a loop already knotted so it would never slip.
"Take the birds with you," she said. "They always know the way back."
He lit the pipe for the first time since the Hester Gale had sailed and watched the smoke climb thin and straight toward the wire. The swallows lifted all at once and turned south over the grey sea. Tom did not follow them that year, but he kept the rope.
