Sanctuary script word tattoo

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black script word, sanctuary, runs diagonally upwards across the skin with a slightly rising baseline. The linework is thin and even, with a connected cursive lettering style and minimal shading. The image is almost entirely greyscale, with a soft-focus checked fabric filling the lower part of the frame.

I've been thinking about what you wrote, that the Lark's crew laughed when you asked what a man was owed for a lost hand. You were right to ask. Your father would have asked too, and he would have been louder about it. But you can't make the sea keep its word by shouting at it, and I want you to know the boys have a place to come in out of the weather regardless of what the owners say. Mrs Pallister has painted the word over the door of the net store in her best hand, the letters running uphill like they're climbing the slipway. Sanctuary, she called it. I told her it was too grand for a shed full of tar. She said a shed is only ever what the people in it make of it.

So the lamp is lit in the window now, the one you can see from the buoy. I leave it burning until the last boat is in, same as always. Come home when the wind backs round, and bring the second-best oilskins, because Ned has taken the good ones for his boy.

Your loving mother, Jean.
