Script quote along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote runs horizontally across the side of the torso, with the opening letters cropped at the left edge of the frame. The linework is thin and even, with slight variation in stroke weight, and the ink appears solid black with no shading. Grey fabric covers the upper part of the image, and the skin tone is soft and lightly lit against a plain background.

Inspector Edith Marr had read eleven hundred letters at the Vallenby crossing that winter, and most of them asked her to be kind. The twelfth was pinned inside a Norwegian seaman's logbook, folded so often the creases had gone soft as cloth. It was written in a looping hand, the ink faded to the blue of a bruise. Dear Ingrid, it began, you were always an obstinate, headstrong girl, and I have never once been sorry for it.

Marr turned the page over. The seaman, Anders Holm, had carried it across three borders. Someone had stamped the back of the paper with a date from 1931 and a sweeping customs mark she did not recognise. She had been told to refuse anything that was not a permit. She set the paper on the counter between them and waited.

The man across the desk did not look at it. He looked at the window, where the rain made grey streaks across the car park, and said, She ran from the farm at fourteen. Walked to the coast. Her mother said she would come back when she was hungry enough. His voice was flat, the voice of a man who had rehearsed this. She is not hungry now. She is a nurse in Bergen.

Marr stamped the logbook without reading further. Some lines were not hers to check. She slid the letter back across the counter, and as he folded it she saw his thumb rest on the word headstrong a moment longer than the rest, the way a man touches a step he means to climb again.
