Love fearlessly script on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the words love fearlessly written in a flowing cursive script across the upper shoulder, close to the collarbone. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits diagonally across soft skin, with a blurred warm background of red fabric and beige carpet.

Mr Oddie had been dead a fortnight when Nell found the card tucked behind the sign-writer's brushes, the pencil roughed out in his looping hand. Three words, then a fourth crossed through and rewritten smaller. She had come to clear the shop on Cutler's Lane because the landlord wanted it empty by Monday, and she had expected invoices, not this.

The shop had painted half the signs in the valley: pubs, butchers, a gilt board for the undertaker on Fitzwilliam Street. Mr Oddie never signed his work. He said a name on a fascia was vanity and a good sign should be read, not admired. The card had been meant for the glass of the front window, she thought, though that pane had long since been replaced with plain glass and nothing had ever gone on it.

She took it to the bench under the gas lamp and tried the words aloud, the way he used to when he wanted a letter to sit right. The first word leaned into the second as if it were walking downhill. The fourth had been struck out, and above it, in the same hand, was a smaller word. She laughed once, alone among the tins of size and gold leaf, because he had been the most careful man she had ever known.

On Monday she gave the landlord the keys and kept the card in her coat pocket. She did not tell him what it said. Some signs are only for the person who has to read them, and she had the brush hand now, and a window of her own to fill.
