Saturn and geometric lines on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A ringed planet resembling Saturn sits near the lower part of the design, joined by a vertical line to a dotted circle with a small dot and a shaded angular shape above. Thin black linework and dotted lines create the outline, with light shading on the planet's body and a grey fill in the angular shape. The design is set against pale skin on the forearm, with a dark leather surface visible at the edge of the frame.

The brass tube had been sold to the Leeds Philosophical Society as new, but Nell Ashdown knew it had been bored out of a naval gun, because her father had told her so the summer before he stopped speaking to anybody at the tannery. Now it sat on the flat roof above the dye works, aimed at a sky the smoke had turned the colour of wet slate, and she was the only one left who could make it work.

Every night at eleven she climbed the iron ladder, lit the paraffin lamp with its cracked chimney, and wrote the readings into his ledger. The margins were full of small marks: a dot for a star she was sure of, a tick for one she was not, and a freehand circle wherever the air had been too thick to see anything at all. Saturn was the only planet that still rose clear over the chimney stacks in October, a pale knot with its rings tipped like a hat set askew.
On the third Thursday the rings came through sharp enough to count, and she saw a faint line running down from the planet towards the horizon, the same plumb line her father had drawn beside every entry of the last year. Across the river, the old carding mill had stood dark since the strike. She sat with the pencil until her fingers went numb, then wrote a dot at the foot of the page, as he always had when he was waiting for something.
At half past two the mill window flickered, once, twice, then a long pause and a short. She knew the rhythm. It was the pattern in his ledger, the tick and the dot and the tick again. She lifted the lamp, turned the wick down to a glow, and answered with the only language they had left, counting the beats out loud until the sky went grey.
