Geometric moon and star motif on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine black linework tattoo sits across the forearm, centred on a circle with a pair of open triangles on either side. Inside the triangles are a sprig of leaves and an eight-point star, and small crosses, dots and a crescent moon are scattered around the outline. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the blurred green background keeps the focus on the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sat on the Hallow Pass for nine weeks when Brother Anselm began to lose the moon. Every night the bell-keeper climbed to the leads of St Cuthric's to look for the thin paring of the new moon, because the feast of the Ember Mass could not be sung until someone had seen it. Cloud came down the valley like wet wool, and the abbot grew short with him at every meal.

Old Sister Wenna, who kept the herb garden and had never once climbed the tower, said her grandmother had a way of seeing through cloud. It was nothing grand. Anselm split a length of ash and carved two triangles from it, their points meeting at a hole no wider than a thumb, and he hung them on a ring of iron the size of a cartwheel rim. In one triangle he cut a sprig of rosemary. In the other he scored an eight-pointed star, so the lamp behind would throw its light through the notches.

On the thirteenth night the cloud thinned for the length of a Paternoster. Anselm sighted through the frame and found the crescent sitting in the hole, pale as a fingernail, exactly where the iron ring cut the sky. He rang the bell until his palms bled, and the Ember Mass was sung on time.

He hung the frame on the nail beside the tower door. Wenna came every evening to look through it before supper. Some nights the moon was there. Some nights she only saw the star on the wood and went back to her beans, content that someone was still counting.
