Black outline tattoo on a forearm with the script Too Beautiful for Earth above a sleeping winged cherub.

Script and winged cherub on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words Too Beautiful for Earth in a flowing script across two lines, with a small outlined figure of a sleeping cherub with wings below. The linework is fine and uniform, with no shading, and the ink is black and grey apart from a small pale pink and blue ribbon shape beside the word Earth. The design is centred on the inner forearm and fills most of the frame against plain skin.

You learned the trade from a man who painted names on lorry doors at the Dover ferry terminal, and by twenty you could letter a flowing script freehand without chalk. The customs men liked you because you were quick and never argued about the price. Nobody asked what the words meant. They asked whether the paint would survive salt.

The commission came on a wet Tuesday in March, a card from a woman on the Kent side who had bought a guesthouse with her late husband's savings and wanted a sign for the front window. She wanted the words to curve across two lines, and beneath them a small sleeping cherub with its wings folded like a blanket. She had sketched it on the back of a bus ticket, the wings lopsided, the face soft as bread. You copied it exactly, because she was clear that the wobbles were the point.

You painted the first line in black enamel, then the second, and when the wings were done you stepped back into the drizzle and saw the cherub looked less like a child than someone who had decided to rest. She paid in cash, folded inside a bank envelope, and asked you to leave off the ribbon she had pencilled in the corner. "Too much colour makes people stare," she said. You agreed, though the blue would have looked well against the wet brick.

That winter you drove the coast road most nights. The window glowed amber, the words legible from the car park, and each time you slowed to read them the cherub seemed to tilt its head towards the glass, as if listening for a boat that might not come in. You never went inside. The sign was finished the moment you lifted the brush, and it was never yours to keep.
