Script faith tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small single-line script word, faith, is tattooed on the inner wrist, with a long flowing stroke extending from the start of the word and a tail running to the right. The linework is thin and even, rendered in dark grey-black ink with no shading. The hand is curled in the foreground with navy nail polish and one glittered gold nail, set against a dark wooden floor.

The ledger at Halse Bridge still has a crease down its spine where my father rested his elbow for thirty-one years. Tonight the lamp buzzes over the barrier and I am the one bent over it, copying out the names of everyone who has crossed since dusk. Most nights the river is loud enough to drown out the clerk in the next booth, and nobody asks me anything I cannot answer with a stamp.

At twenty past eleven a man pushed a bicycle up to the window with a sack of seed potatoes tied to the crossbar. His papers were in order. A stamp needs a steady hand, not a sure heart, my father used to say, and I pressed it down so hard the ink bled through to the next page. He asked me, in careful English, whether the painted line across the bridge was really where the country ended. I told him it was a line someone had drawn with a long run-out at the end, the way a pen lifts off the page, and that the river was only water that did not care which side it fell on.
He laughed and said his grandmother had told him the same thing about the sea. Then he pushed off into the dark, the sack bumping against his back, and I sat looking at the page where his name sat above mine, both of us leaving the same small trail of ink.
Before my shift ended I wrote one word in the margin, in the narrow hand my father taught me, and let its tail run off past the edge of the column where nobody would think to check.
