Love script with grey ribbon on a wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a healed or healing tattoo on the inner wrist, shown against a dark background and blue denim. The word Love is written in black flowing script, with a loop of grey ribbon passing through the letters. The ribbon is shaded in several tones of grey with a soft highlight, while the script uses clean, thin black outlines.

Dear Tom,

The Bramley crop came in grey this year, the way it does when the rain holds off too long and the skins dull before they ripen. Dad would have had something to say about that. I stood under the old tree by the gate this morning with the ladder and thought about the ribbon you tied to its lowest branch the week before you left, the one you swore you'd come back for. It is still there, faded to the colour of wet slate, looped round the bark twice like a stitch someone forgot to finish.
Mrs Pryce from the village shop came up with a basket for the jam and asked after you. I told her you were in Leeds learning to be a surveyor, which is true as far as it goes. She said she'd seen a grey ribbon like that on a poster for the charity walk and wasn't it a shame how people wore their sorrows where everybody could read them. I said some people wear their love where they can see it every morning, and she laughed and bought two pounds of windfalls.
I have sorted the late apples into crates and written the variety on each lid in pencil, the way you used to. Gala, Discovery, a dozen Egremonts that went soft in the shed. The last crate I did not label. I kept looking at the blank wood, then I wrote LOVE in capitals across it, and put the lid on quickly before the wasps found the sugar.
Come home for the picking, or don't, but come when you can.
Mum
