Script lettering and lines on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a woman's upper arm and shoulder, with her face cropped out of frame. Fine line handwritten script sits near the shoulder, and three thin parallel lines wrap horizontally around the upper arm. The monochrome lighting is soft, and the loose vest and long hair fill the rest of the frame.

Dear Tam, the relief boat didn't come on Tuesday, so I've been up the tower three nights running with the lamp and the log. Don't tell Mother. The weather has turned the colour of wet slate, and the gulls sit along the railings as if they're waiting for a sermon.

Mr Pollard, the old keeper, left his sleeves folded in the press when the Board sent him inland last winter. Each cuff had three bands of brass wire stitched round it, one for every year he stood watch. I asked him once what they meant. He said a keeper counts the things that don't change so he'll notice when something does. I've taken up the habit. There are three thin lines on the back page of the log, one for each dory the sea has taken off the point since I came.
Last night the light failed at two. I climbed with a candle in a jam jar and found the wick sooted black, so I sat on the iron steps for an hour with my hands round the glass, feeling foolish and not at all afraid. Then the fog lifted and a trawler's lamp swung up the channel, steady as a question.
I wrote the keeper's name at the top of the new page in my own hand, the way he did, so whoever comes after will know who was here. Come home at Christmas if the boat runs. Bring the good ink. Your loving sister, Ada.
