Origami crane on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small origami crane is tattooed on the outer upper arm, with the bird drawn in folded, angular planes. The linework is fine and the shading is soft grey, with the bird appearing mostly as an outline with light tonal changes. The black and white photograph is taken in side profile, with the arm raised and the rest of the figure cropped out of frame.

The map had been wrong for forty years, and Dorothy Quayle knew it because she had walked the boundary herself, counting fence posts in the rain. The county had sent the drawing back with a red line through the stream, so she folded it on the kitchen table, creases first, the way her father had taught her to fold a thing so it could be opened again without tearing.

The crane took shape in the wrong place: the wing of the hill, the tail of the lane. She pressed the neck flat with a bone folder, and the paper gave the bird its sharp angles, each plane catching the lamp. By the third hour it sat on the windowsill, and the old stream showed through its belly like a watermark.

In the morning she carried it out past the church, past the last gate where the forest began, and let it go off the stile. It did not fall. It tilted over the alders, found the warm air rising off the mill race, and climbed until its edges went silver against the clouds.

The clerk at the council wrote back a fortnight later, polite and unhurried, to say the boundary stood as drawn. Dorothy read the letter by the window and then went out to the stile, where a single crease lay in the grass, pointing north, towards a field nobody had measured in years.
