Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing on white paper shows ornate script lettering reading "Fuck this shit", with the words stacked over three lines. The letters have dotted outlines and are surrounded by small flowers, leaves, hearts and dot clusters. The drawing is shown flat on a wooden surface, and the linework is uniform with no shading or colour.

The allotment committee voted three to two that the new sign for plot fourteen could not say what Irene Pask wanted it to say, so she took the job to Dolores Finch, who lettered the church flower rota and the chalkboard outside the Crown. Dolores took the brief seriously. She spent a wet Tuesday at her kitchen table with a fine nib and a jar of pencils, looping and dotting until the words stopped reading as words and became a kind of hedge.

When the sign went up in April, Mr Hollis from the committee read it twice with his glasses pushed up, then walked to the shed for a stepladder and came back without one. The sentiment was unchanged. It had simply been dressed for Sunday. Hearts sat in the gaps between the lines, daisies bloomed off the crossbar of a t, and a column of dots ran down the tail of the final letter like rain on a windowpane.

Irene stood beside it with her trowel and flask and waited for an objection. None came. Mrs Okafor from plot nine asked whether Dolores could do one for her shed door, and Mr Hollis, who had sat through forty years of meetings without once raising his voice, asked quietly whether the vicar had seen it yet.

The vicar saw it on the second Sunday in June. He stopped at the gate with his hymn sheets, read it slowly with his lips moving, then leaned on the fence and asked Irene whether Dolores might be free for the vestry door. "Only if you pay her in courgettes," she said, and went back to her beans.
