Ned Harrow fiddled at the Lamplight Rooms every Saturday for thirty years, and in all that time he never once gave a tune away. He sold them. A waltz cost a shilling, a reel cost two, and he kept the coins in a leather purse tied to his belt, where he could feel them knock against his hip while he played.

The stranger came in on the last Saturday of October, when the rain had got into the floorboards and the dancers were tired. He wore a grey coat buttoned to the throat and asked for one tune, slow, with nothing in it but money. He laid down a coin so bright it lit the inside of the fiddle case. Ned looked at it for a long while, then he played, and the couples on the floor turned faster and faster, their boots striking sparks off the boards, until the men were laughing and the women were crying and nobody could stop.

Ned stopped first, when his bow hand split and blood ran down the horsehair. The stranger was standing by the door with a ledger open on his arm. He ran a thumb down the page and said, quite gently, that the tune had been paid for in names, and Ned's was the last one left. At dawn the purse was empty. The coins lay in the fiddle case, warm as bread and going green at the edges, and the stranger was gone, though the ink on the bar where he had written was still wet.
