Black and grey realism tattoo on an upper arm, with bold block letters made from a dollar bill and a portrait in the centre.

Dollar bill lettering on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo uses large block letters, each filled with a close-up of a banknote, including a central portrait, serial numbers and fine printed text. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast between the dark outlines and the grey tones of the paper. The design fills the width of the frame against a plain skin background.

Dear Tomas,

Mum's biscuit tin is open on the kitchen table again, and I have spent the whole evening with the magnifier you left behind. Every note in it has been pressed flat under the cutlery drawer, and I took them out one at a time, reading the serial numbers aloud the way you used to read football scores. Seven digits, a letter, then the fine print along the edge that nobody ever bothers to look at.

Dad never spent a note he had been handed. He said paper remembers every hand it passes through, so he wanted only clean ones. When the bakery on Harrow Road closed, he walked home with his wages folded inside his cap, and he would not let Mum iron them until he had held each one up to the window and checked the corners.

It was tucked behind the last twenty, a scrap of bakery receipt paper with his blocky capitals: PAY THE MAN IN THE BLUE VAN WHAT HE IS OWED, NOT WHAT HE ASKS. I went through the photographs of you on the pier and found the van parked behind you in every one of them.

I am posting you the note with his thumbprint smudged across the old man's chin. Go and find the van, Tomas, and see who was owed.
