Dollar sign and ace of spades on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large green dollar sign with a shaded, raised appearance sits in the centre of the image, with a black ace of spades card partly visible above it. Grey smoky shading fills the background around the motifs, and the soft greens and greys are shown on a curved upper arm.

Brother Anselm had kept the abbey's ledgers for thirty-one years and had never once seen a coin go missing, which was why the abbot sent him to the back room of the Crown and Plough with the roof timbers in his satchel. The rain had taken the south transept's lead, and the bishop's man had promised a grant only if the chapter could show it had raised the rest itself.

The landlord dealt the cards face up on a barrel lid. Anselm had been warned that such games were the devil's arithmetic, but he had counted the tally marks on the wall while the stranger shuffled, and the sums came out clean. The stranger wore a silver ring and laughed like a cart on cobbles. He turned the top card with one finger. It was the ace of spades, black as a chapel at vespers, and he tapped it twice.
"Double or nothing on the roof, brother," he said, and pushed a stack of green notes across the wood, crisp as new psalters, each one stamped with a pale eagle that did not look at all like a saint.
Anselm thought of the cellar, the forty barrels of ale that paid for the bread, and the prayer he had said each morning for steady hands. He pushed his own purse forward and turned over his card. It was a two of clubs, which was no kind of answer. When the bell began for compline, the stranger bowed with mock reverence and left the notes behind. At dawn Anselm found the ace tucked inside the ledger, and the abbot, who had lost more sleep over the roof than he would admit, slid it under the entry for lead, where it still sits.
