A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Ebbs had lettered every boat name in Carrow Bay for forty years, and he could tell a skipper's mood by how long the man stood at the quay rail before asking for paint. Ruth Tallis stood there a long while, tapping her boot on the cobbles, until he finally sat on an upturned crate with the brush in his hand.

"Which is it to be," he said, "you are my, or my only?"

She looked out past the breakwater, where her father's coble was coming in low under a sky the colour of wet slate. "My only," she said. "He used to say I was the one thing on this coast that could make him laugh before his tea. I'll not have him thinking I've a whole crowd of sunshine to spare."

Mr Ebbs chalked the letters out first, the way he always did, and when he came to the loop he let his wrist go loose and drew it round like a man signing his name without looking. The paint was black, with a thread of white in it to take the light. By the time the coble nosed up to the steps, the sun had broken through over the chapel, and the wet lettering on the transom caught it and threw it back at the water.

Her father stood in the stern a long moment, reading. Then he laughed, the way she'd said he would, and the gulls went up off the wall all at once.
