By the end of August the wasps had found the windfalls in the long grass, and Tobiah Pell still stood on the top rung of the ladder with a knife in his teeth, slicing a scion from last year's wood. Maud brought his tea out in the blue enamel mug, the one with the chip she would not let him throw away. She leaned on the gate post where the two of them had scratched their initials the summer they married, and she said what she always said when the light went low and gold over the Malverns: "I'll love you forever." He would answer with the second line, that he would like her for always, and then they would argue about which of them had got the better half of the bargain.

The blight came the year their boy turned nine. It took the old Blenheims one by one, black along the leaf edges, and by October there was only one tree left standing that did not show it. Tobiah cut a length of its wood, bound it tight to a sound rootstock, and sealed the join in wax. "It'll fruit in seven years," he told her. "Or it won't, and I'll have tried."

Seven years later their daughter stood on the ladder in her boots, reaching for the first red apple the new tree had ever given. Maud looked up from the gate and called out the old words, and the girl, who had heard them all her life, called them back in a voice that carried right across the orchard.
