Script quote tattoo across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two photographs show the back of a person with a fine black script tattoo reading 'There is a light that never goes out'. The lettering runs horizontally across the upper back, close to the shoulder blade, with smooth, even linework. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the second photo is a closer view of the same piece.

Dear Tom,

The lamp in the cottage window has not gone out once since the post cart stopped running past Hollin Wood. Mrs Abernethy at the shop says I am wasting oil, and I told her I would rather waste oil than leave the lane dark for a man who might be walking it. She laughed the way she does, then bought the candles I was going to buy anyway.
The village has gone quieter. The men who could still stand went down to the valley in the spring, and the trees have crept back over the old quarry road, so the children now have to be told twice where the path ends. Old Pritchard swears he heard the chapel bell ringing from somewhere inside the wood last Tuesday. I don't believe him, but I didn't sleep either.
You said before you left that keeping the lamp lit was a foolish thing, since you had no way of knowing it was burning. You were right about that. But the light was never really for the road. It was for me, so I could get up each morning and see something glowing that I had chosen to keep glowing.
Come home by the quarry path. It is longer, but the lamp will be waiting at the end of it, the same as ever.
Yours, Ellen
