A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harriet had been counting the lamp's sweeps since supper, the way her father had taught her, one flash for every breath she held. By the time the fog came down over Skerry Point the count had reached four hundred and eleven, and her hand was cramped around the stub of pencil she had borrowed from the logbook.

On the back of a tide table she had drawn a ring of stars, each one no bigger than a pinprick, and in the middle she was trying to write what her mother used to say at bedtime, the line about wishes coming true when a heart was honest about them. Her letters kept sliding downhill. Each time she started again, the ink from the old bottle thinned to grey and the nib scratched through the paper.

Her father came up the iron stairs with a flask and his wet coat dripping on every step. He read over her shoulder without saying the words were wrong. He took the pencil, drew a small round-eared shape at the foot of the circle, and told her the light did not need to be perfect, only kept lit. Then he showed her how to hold the glass steady so the flame would not gutter in the draught from the gallery door.

When the fog thinned near dawn, Harriet saw that the last star on her page was the one she had been unable to place, and that it was the trawler's lamp coming in past the rocks. She wrote the final line in her own untidy hand, folded the tide table into the logbook, and left it open at the morning's date for the next keeper to find.
